When I moved from India to the UK a decade ago, the lack of colour in the average wardrobe struck me immediately…. Blacks, Greys and Navy Blues almost seemed to be an “unofficial” dress code and I sometimes felt like a peacock draped in my vibrant hues... I was however pleasantly surprised by the number of people wanting to know where I had bought my “ so very different” shawl or wrap from and soon realised that there was no place to buy a good quality shawl or scarf at a reasonable price. It was amazing how many poor imitations of traditional shawls and scarves were passed off as real “pashminas”!
And so Mandira was born – because life is too short to not to wear the real thing…because we need to celebrate every colour in the rainbow and more…
Everything you see on display here has been handmade or hand finished. The textiles are mostly natural - be it cotton, wool or silk and the colours are mainly vegetable dyes. All embroidery is done by hand or hand run looms. All jewellery is handmade in pure silver with a 24 carat gold wash where required and all stones are the real. |

| We have endeavoured to keep the quality of all items – big or small, the very best. It must however be stated that an irregular finish is a characteristic of hand made textiles – they can never attain the smooth perfection of machine made fabrics. According to legend, all master craftsmen deliberately leave a minute flaw because only God could be perfect! We think that this lends to the overall charm, and that you go away with the feeling that the piece you have is one of a kind – flaws notwithstanding – it can never be replicated. |
